You can't do what you want. The only available function that comes close is the CaretCategory property of the NotesUIView, which is a property of the "selection box" (caret) in the view. In all other cases, you will be looking at a multiple value if the documentin question is categorized on a multi-value field or formula result. This has been discussed several times in this forum and in the 4 & 5 forum.
